What Are Mood Changes?

Mood changes are when a person experiences and expresses a variety of emotions within a span of few hours. Someone who suffers from this problem, goes from being very happy to feeling very angry, irritable, and frustrated within a very short period of time.

Mood swing affects twice as many women as men. Studies have shown that hormones have a very deep impact on brain chemistry that controls the mood and emotions. A lot of factors in women's life such as hormonal imbalance, menstrual cycle, menopause, pregnancy, hypothyroidism, any endocrinal abnormality or other biological problems, all play a very important role in fluctuating the mood. At the time of menopause, there are a lot of changes between the hormones estrogen, testosterone and progesterone that results into hormonal imbalance and causes mood swings.

Similarly, at the time of ovulation, women experience a lot of behavioral, emotional and physical changes due to hormonal changes. Hormones play havoc with your moods causing anxiety and depression. When your hormones are imbalanced, you are much more likely to suffer from fatigue, forgetfulness, mood swings, insomnia & weight gain making weight loss impossible.

Living in the 'fast' world of today exposes you to unavoidable levels of stress - causing elevated cortisol levels. The problem is, sustained high levels of cortisol destroy healthy muscle (important for burning calories); impairs your metabolism & contributes to anxiety, depression and mood changes.

Left untreated, anxiety, depression and mood changes can cause chaos in your life & relationships with those around you, so it is important to address them. They do cause your metabolism to slow down, due to their hormonal influences. Read Yvonne's journey here

Mood Swings - What Hormones Affect Mood And Cause Weight Gain?

Hormones carry messages from glands to cells to maintain chemical levels in the bloodstream that achieve balance or "homeostasis".

If we're under too much stress, though, the adrenals work overtime, favoring cortisol instead of DHEA production. Unfortunately elevated cortisol levels contribute to weight gain around the middle ... something we can all do without!

Major contributors to hormonal imbalance associated with anxiety, depression and mood changes are:

Cortisol also stimulates the release of glucose, potentially contributing to metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance & subsequent weight gain. It stimulates your appetite & can leave you craving carbohydrates making weight loss difficult. Something you don't need when you are trying to lose weight. This rebound effect is often incorrectly labeled as emotional eating. Although some of us do eat for comfort, often the cravings are ravenous & uncontrollable. If this is happening to you, it could be your hormones! Read Carolyn's journey here

Most importantly it interferes with healthy hormonal function, contributing to conditions such as Thyroid imbalance, and ovarian imbalances such as Menopause, PCOS, Fibroids, Cysts & Endometriosis. All of these lead to weight gain and make it very difficult for you to lose weight.

Mood changes can also be caused by underlying neurotransmitter weakness, relationship disturbance, physical and emotional issues and stressful life circumstances.  All of these factors contribute to weight gain, and directly affect your metabolism causing weight loss plateau's.

Mood Swings - Neuro Transmitter Weakness and Mood

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers released from nerve cells that communicate to other nerve cells to control major body functions including movement, emotional response and mood.

The most commonly known neurotransmitters are serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, acetylcholine, and GABA and histamine.

Typical signs and symptoms of neuro transmitter weakness are:

  • Urine Frequency
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain in a pear-shaped distribution (hips and thighs).

It's uncommon for a woman to have all of these symptoms. But two or more symptoms suggest that a lab test for blood histamine is in order.

So what can cause low levels?

Mood Swing Cure - Functional Pathology Testing to Cure Mood Swings

When you join my program, I will piece together your symptoms and really pinpoint what's causing your mood swings.

A range of functional pathology tests are available to help ensure we establish an effective treatment strategy to improve mood swings and provide a baseline to monitor progress. Often I will recommend further testing if necessary and establish what's causing your mood swings and tailor a treatment strategy to address the underlying causes.

If I feel that further testing is required, I will make those recommendations and provide you with a referral.
