Thyroid - thyroid problems, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and weight loss

natural treatment for thyroid problems that works

If you are suffering from a hormonal imbalance such as hypothyroidism or an 'under active thyroid', you may experience a slow metabolism, fatigue, bloating, mood changes and weight gain. Natural weight loss may also be a challenge. You may also find that you gain weight at a rapid rate no matter how well you eat and how much exercise you do. When you have an underactive thyroid, it is like your metabolism has stopped and losing weight is impossible.

Understanding how to lose weight with a thyroid imbalance will unlock your secret to weight loss and long term successful weight maintenance.  Looking beyond blood test results that come back normal is the first step, and the second step is to apply a targeted weight loss program specifically formulated to lose weight with a thyroid condition.

What is 'thyroid imbalance' or 'hypothyroidism'?

Over the years, I've had many women ask me - "Is my thyroid making me fat?"

For many women, the answer is "yes" but the connection isn't simple. Thyroid function is intricately connected with your metabolism - the rate you burn fuel. This greatly affects your weight loss attempts. A healthy thyroid also depends on other body mechanisms, including hormones and this is why a tailored natural weight loss program is needed to treat the causes of your thyroid problem.

Most thyroid problems don't reveal themselves until a broader pattern of hormonal imbalance develops - which is one of the reasons why you need a thorough assessment. Once the cause and type of thyroid problem is established, a natual weight loss program can be tailored to re establish healthy hormone balance.

Thyroid imbalance can be the result of underlying conditions such as:

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE or Lupus)causes weight gain

Lupus is a thyroid imbalance caused by a autoimmune disease in which a person's immune system malfunctions, triggering the body to attack its own tissues and the thyroid gland is affected making weight loss slow.  This can be caused by:

Genetics: Most researchers agree that genetics is at least one factor in determining a person propensity for developing lupus.

Environment:  Smoking and exposure to smoking, stress, and exposure to toxins such as trichloroethylene in well water and silica dust can be lupus triggers.

Hormones: Pregnancy can be a trigger to lupus.  Research also suggests that hormonal factors are linked to autoimmune disease. Some studies have found a correlation between  a increased risk of lupus and high levels of estrogen.

Viruses and bacteria: viruses like cytomegalovirus, parvovirus and hepatitis C may cause lupus.  And the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is linked to lupus.

Medications :  It has been established that some medications are suspected triggers of lupus.

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis makes losing weight difficult

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism and is 5-10 times more common in women than in men.  It is an autoimmune disease, where the body attacks the thyroid gland - as if it was foreign tissue making your metabolism slow and weight loss difficult. This is why a ordinary weight loss program won’t work - it doesn’t address hormones!

Hashimoto's thyroiditis tends to occur in families, and is associated with a clustering of other autoimmune conditions such as Type 1 diabetes, and celiac disease. Post partum Thyroiditis causes weight gain

Postpartum thyroiditis is a temporary, painless inflammation of the thyroid gland that occurs within a year after 5% to 10% of all pregnancies causing unexplained weight gain and making weight loss difficult.  This is why it is important to have a weight loss program specifically designed for this condition.

Researchers don't know exactly what causes the thyroid gland to become inflamed after child birth,  however, they do know that antithyroid antibodies (Thyroperoxidase antibodies or TPOab) are present in the bloodstream of women with postpartum thyroiditis. This indicates the possibility that postpartum thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease.

During pregnancy, the immune system becomes suppressed, possibly to prevent the formation of antibodies that could harm the fetus. After delivery, the immune system reactivates. It is during this time that the immune system produces antibodies that attack the thyroid gland causing your metabolism to slow down triggering weight gain.

Studies have shown that women with Type 1 diabetes, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are particularly at risk for developing postpartum thyroiditis. In addition to indicating the likelihood of postpartum thyroiditis, the presence of TPOab also indicates an increased risk of miscarriage.

Salivary Hormone Testing for Thyroid

By completing my full online naturopathic health and hormone test, I will invest no less than 45 minutes piecing together your symptoms and really pinpoint what hormones are causing your weight gain and other health complaints.  If I feel that further salivary or blood testing via you GP is required, I will make those recommendations.

For example, as part of the process of compiling a natural weight loss program for you, I may suggest measuring hormone levels by using salivary hormone test kits, available from my clinic.  Salivary hormone test kits can assist in the proper diagnoses of hormonal imbalances contributing to weight gain and conditions such as Fatigue, PCOS, Fibroids, Endometriosis, Cyst, Menopause and Thyroid imbalance. Why is low thyroid and slow weight loss so common in women?

So let's explore what other hormones influence your thyroid and slow your metabolism:

Thyroid imbalance and oestrogen balance

Excess oestrogen levels associated with PCOS, Endometrios, Fibroids, Endometriosis, Cysts and early menopause is a key factor in decreased thyroid function due to its impact on lowering levels of T3 (a thyroid hormone) in the blood.

Thyroid imbalance and stress

There is a connection between stress and thyroid hormones due to the affect of the hormone cortisol.

Stress stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), and causes elevated cortisol levels. We know high cortisol (hypercortisolism) in the bloodstream can affect thyroid function by directly inhibiting the production of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and also inhibiting the conversion of T4 to T3.

Thyroid hormones and Insulin

Other hormonal imbalances may be causing your body to not metabolise carbohydrates as well, which can lead to an increased storage of fats and higher levels of blood sugar. Excess blood sugar can cause insulin resistance and is directly linked to thyroid imbalance and weight gain.
