Understanding Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of your body. All cells in your body are made from them and your body is regulated by them. When your body is unwell it is depleted on a cellular level. With over 14 years of prescribing herbs, nutritional supplements and working within the natural health industry, I believe that you can't effectively treat a patient unless you have restored this fundamental underlying cellular imbalance. Amino acids are found in all protein foods. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and are essential for making strong, healthy muscles in the body. They are needed for healthy mitochondrial functioning, the removal of toxins and most importantly needed for healthy hormonal balance.

These days, deficiencies of the amino acids happen more often than you think. Many people, especially those who take medications, consume alcohol, soft drink and refined carbohydrates on a regular basis are deficient in amino acids. Thus, supplementation of amino acids is necessary.

There are nine essential amino acids and thirteen non-essential amino acids, as well as semi-essential amino acids.

Essential amino acids are vitally essential for human health, while the non-essential amino acids are still required, but are not vital as they can be either be created by the essential amino acids or formed by the body.

Semi-essential amino acids are amino acids which are normally non-essential, but which must be provided by the diet in special circumstances and when the body's ability to produce them is impaired.
