PMS Relief

Stop PMS with natural treatment

Pms, premenstrual syndrome, period, weight loss, gain, stubborn, during, before, after, stress, anxiety, hormones

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is am uncomfortable time of the month between the bloating, breast tenderness, mood changes, and cramps. Your diet can have a major impact on the symptoms you experience during this time of the month. Here's how to stop PMS with diet.

Many women accept PMS and other menstrual irregularities as a normal part of life. In fact, at least 60% of Australian women suffer from PMS & it is more common in women in their 30's. In reality, menstruation should not cause any significant interruption to your everyday living. Symptoms of PMS are a clear sign that your reproductive system is not working as well as it can be. Essentially, your PMS is a consequence of disturbances in hormonal production, elimination and metabolism. Weight gain occurs primarily because of oestrogen dominance. Oestrogen dominance describes a condition where you can have normal or excessive oestrogen, but have too little progesterone to balance oestrogen's effects in your body. This decreases thyroid function and increases fat storage.

Although an effective prescription treatment that relieves all of the symptoms of PMS has yet to be found, there's mounting evidence to suggest that diet may play an important role in treating severe PMS symptoms. An association between PMS and diet is also supported by several studies showing improvement in PMS symptoms when a premenstrual diet is followed.

If You Suffer From PMS and Are Not Treating the Cause, You Might Never Lose Weight.

PMS relief - What causes PMS?

There are numerous studies that clearly link PMS to hormone imbalances and weight gain. Caused by a hormonal imbalance in your female reproductive hormones, PMS takes hold after ovulation and often gets worse just before your period. It's not 'normal' & should be given as much importance as other health complaints.

PMS can be caused by:

How does your PMS cause weight gain and sabotage your weight loss?

PMS Relief - Neurotransmitters

Firstly, women with PMS have lower levels neurotransmitters such as Histamine, an important neurotransmitter that targets brain receptors to reduce anxiety and create calm during times of stress. This contributes to mood changes and can also make you crave foods making weight loss harder.

PMS Relief - Hormones

Oestrogen: Secondly, mood symptoms are further exacerbated by the elevated levels of estrogen, which stimulate the Central Nervous System, making you ONE FEISTY WOMAN! For some women, drinking alcohol to relax becomes a habit, but this also causes weight gain and makes weight loss impossible.

Insulin: Before your period your body may not be able to metabolise carbohydrates as well, which leads to an increased storage of fats and higher levels of blood sugar. Excess blood sugar can lead to insulin resistance and is directly linked to weight gain.

Cortisol: is a hormone released in response to stress. There is a connection between stress and thyroid function. This is due to the affect of cortisol.

Stress stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), causing high levels of cortisol. This stimulation has huge implications throughout the body, especially in the gut, brain, adrenals and thyroid.

We know high cortisol (hypercortisolism) in the bloodstream can affect thyroid function by directly inhibiting the production of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and also inhibiting the conversion of T4 to T3.

In addition, women can suffer from insomnia during PMS and when you are deprived of sleep, cortisol (a hormone commonly released in response to physical or emotional stress) is released at an increased level and stimulates your appetite causing cravings and weight gain.

Unfortunately the combinations of neurological and hormonal factors that cause PMS are both linked to weight gain and both have a direct affect upon your metabolism making weight loss difficult.

PMS pretty much is a sign that your hormones need an overhaul; it is a major symptom of reproductive hormone imbalance.

If PMS is left untreated, more serious health complaints can emerge from the hormone imbalance such as metabolic syndrome, Polycystic Ovarian Disorder (PCOS) or Fibroids, Endometriosis or Cysts.  And this shockingly can lead you to gain approximately 5kg every year! This is why some women get stuck on the diet roller coaster.
