Although changes in the genetic makeup of populations occur too slowly to be responsible for the current rapid rapid rise in obesity, genes do play a role in the development of obesity. Most likely, genes regulate how our bodies capture, store, and release energy from food.
How might genes contribute to obesity? The answer is not simple. A Thrifty genotype may mean that there is a mismatch between todays environment and energy-thrifty genes. In other words the same genes that helped our ancestors survive occasional famines are now being challenged by environments in which food is plentiful year round.
In addition, genes play a large role in influencing other factors such as hormones and inflammation that are triggers for fat cell sickness in women.
