PCOS - Fall Pregnant Naturally

Improve Your Fertiity with PCOS

Many people give no thought to their fertility until they are either trying to prevent or achieve pregnancy. The contraceptive pill is often used to manage fertility and only when a couple has problems conceiving do they start to learn about different aspects of fertility. Infertility rates are rising and we are now seeing a dramatic increase in referrals to IVF practitioners. However, with some knowledge and forethought, many fertility problems like PCOS can be avoided.

Pregnancy is achieved when a sperm fertilises an egg, but there are only about 6 days in a month when intercourse may result in a pregnancy. During a womans cycle she would normally release one egg per cycle, which must be fertilised within 12 hours of release. A males sperm however can stay alive for several days within a woman and cervical mucus plays a critical role in this. Unfortunately, one of the side affects of PCOS is inadequate cervical mucus.

Mucus is secreted by the cervix and, to a lesser degree, the vagina. In 1959 Erik Odeblad, Emiratus Professor in the Department of Medical Biophysics, University of Umea, Sweden, identified different types of mucus that are produced by different areas of the cervix for different purposes. For much of a womans cycle, the mucus is white and creamy, forming a thick plug that blocks the cervix, trapping sperm and destroying them in an acidic environment. This reaction is hightened in women suffering from PCOS.

However, about 4-6 days before ovulation, the mucus type changes to be thinner and clearer, with a texture like raw egg white. This provides an ideal, alkaline environment to nourish the sperm and enable them to move towards the egg as it is released from the ovary. At this time the woman can observe the change in mucus, with a definite feeling of wetness and lubrication. This type of mucus generally lasts until about 2 days after ovulation and marks the fertile period in a womans cycle, indicating the best time for intercourse. Many women who suufer from PCOS, experience difficulties with establishing regular ovulatory cycles, which makes falling pregnant naturally challenging.

Understanding the Importance Of Mucus Secretions and Fertility

Checking for changes in cervical mucus provides a good indication that a woman is ovulating and helps her pinpoint her fertile period, especially if cycles are irregular.

Many women who have difficulty conceiving have very little fertile mucus. Just by increasing the quantity and improving the quality of their cervical mucus they will get pregnant. There are many factors that can affect the quality of cervical mucus, including diet and toxicity. Also, the period of fertile mucus is much shorter in women approaching menopause and in women who have taken the contraceptive pill for several years.

There is evidence to suggest that taking the contraceptive pill from a young age, before a girls body has really settled into a normal cycle of hormones, means that when she comes off the pill, her body is confused and does not really know how to respond. In this case it can take months or even years to establish a normal cycle. When a girl starts to menstruate she will often be bleeding without having ovulated (annovulatory cycle). She may ovulate one month and then not again for several more months. The change in cervical mucus is a good indicator that ovulation is happening. There is a trend among doctors to place young girls on the pill to regulate cycles, which may be heavy and/or painful, without consideration to the long-term effect. There are however natural herbal and homeopathic remedies which can be used in these situations to regulate cycles, without the long-term effects.

Mucus observation forms the basis of natural family planning systems, such as the Billings Method, which, when followed correctly, provide reliable alternatives to contraceptive methods which affect hormones and can have undesirable side-effects, both in the short-term and long-term.

What causes Irregular Ovulation with PCOS

Everyday factors such as poor diet and lifestyle habits, poor nutrient intake, stress, inflammation, thyroid imbalance and household toxins can impact on hormonal balance, causing decreased fertility or unexplained infertility in both men and women. In Australia, it is estimated that 1 in 20 men have some kind of fertility problem due to poor sperm development. Research indicates that a highly processed diet, emotional, physical or toxic stress as well as poor lifestyle factors can impact on the quality of sperm health and male fertility problems leading to complications in pregnancy such as miscarriage.

Todays lifestyle tends to burden our bodies with excess toxins, while depleted soils and over-processed foods leave many people nutritionally depleted. Convenience foods, trans fats, pesticides, cigarettes, alcohol, drugs all contribute to your toxic load. A toxic body will have problems developing healthy sperm or eggs or good quality fertile mucus. Even if the unhealthy sperm and/or eggs fertilise, the risk of miscarriage, birth defects or childhood illnesses increases. It takes approximately 3 months for eggs and sperm to develop in the parents therefore its important to begin preconception care at least 3 months prior to conception.

Levels of toxicity and deficiencies of essential nutrients can be assessed for both the man and woman using a simple hair analysis test. From there a program to eliminate toxic elements, as well as supplementing for any deficiencies, can begin.

Even if both parents are fertile, the health and wellness of both parents prior to conception is one of the most important factors in determining a healthy, viable pregnancy. Diet plays an important role in fertile cervical mucus production, as well as in balancing hormones and creating a healthy environment in which the baby can develop. To optimise fertility, hormonal health and the health of the baby, good dietary habits and nutritional support should commence at least 3 to 4 months prior to conceiving.

Avoid foods that make your blood acidic such as processed foods, food additives, canned fruit and vegetables, excess caffeine and grain consumption, refined flours and sugar, hydrogenated oils, etc. Also alcohol, smoking and other drugs should be avoided and water should be filtered.

Doctors routinely recommend folate supplements for women intending to conceive as it is well known that folate deficiency causes neural tube defects. This being said, folate is only one of the vital nutrients that a developing baby requires at conception. Folate supplementation should not be used alone and can often mask a B12 deficiency. Other essential nutrients include vitamins A and D, magnesium, calcium, iron, essential fatty acids, iodine and zinc, in conjunction with a healthy, well balanced, low GI and chemical free diet.

Improving the natural health of both parents prior to conception is the key to conceiving naturally and giving birth to a healthy baby. Attention should be given to eliminating toxins and nutritional deficiencies prior to conception, using herbal and homeopathic remedies under the guidance of a qualified naturopath to balance hormones, and following a healthy diet.
